Why we work together?
Petrovaradin Fortress, underground devastation

The Town of Petrovaradin is a prominent urban section with prevailingly baroque character, also known as “the little town”. It is the most valuable among to be preserved historic sites of the city of Novi Sad and a systematic, planned reconstruction efforts could make it one of the most attractive tourist destinations not only in Novi Sad, but and in the region.

The reconstruction would have to be massive and comprehensive – to involve a revitalization of existing built areas, rebuilding of infrastructure, repaving of all streets and squares. Of course, only rebuilding or restructuring an urban space is not enough. Major changes should be introduced to provide services that would draw people’s attention from this particular area, what at present virtually is nonexistent and has been long forgotten. There should be well designed presentations of local history and culture, the popular ones, aimed at tourists, as well as those involving museum exhibitions.

Of course, all these actions should be accompanied by a developed information system, involving detailed and precise identification of all landmarks and streets, accompanied by quality tourist services about accommodation and cuisine, and by offering a variety of supporting printed materials – maps, guides, brochures and advertisements.iety of supporting printed materials – maps, guides, brochures and advertisements.

This cultural and historic monument that belongs to world heritage, a priceless architectural entirety, a set of buildings that, according to the most recent international standards, represents a highly attractive museum complex, an enormous area stretching over more than 14 ha of urbanized space, a riverbank that could be used to build a quay or a marina, a long waterway (labyrinth-like and extremely complex, realized in the form of impressive trenches of Wasserstadt), an impressive green area with a botanic garden situated in a wider downtown area, tens of thousands of exclusive residential, business and tourist places to live and rent (mostly built in the 18th century), a place that is well connected to Novi Sad but is also far enough from Novi Sad so that it possible to organize unrestricted, round-the-clock town life devoted to tourism, a place that has good potential to become the center of studios for various arts and workshops in which old crafts are preserved, a place with many cultural institutions employing highly professional people and with a guide service, a place for which many international institutions and tour operators are interested and willing to invest into its revitalization and marketing, and a place which has about 1000 inhabitants who are willing to take an active role in promoting their community – all this is a stern warning about the lack of initiative in and indifference of our society towards first-class cultural heritage, which the Lower Town undoubtedly represents, but, at the same time, all this is a priceless guarantee for the future project of the Lower Town’s conservation, restoration and revitalization, because the Lower Town possesses unlimited potential and is an edifice of national importance – the characteristics which stem from a realistic assumption that the Petrovaradin Fortress represents a unique tourist center in the very heart of South-East Europe.
