The Petrovaradin Fortress and Lower Town
Heritage on the Danube
„The Community shall contribute to the flowering of culture of member states, while respecting their national and regional diversity and at the same time bringing in common cultural heritage into force“ (Treaty of Maastricht, 1992).
“Suburbium” is trying to bring into the force a message that the right of the heritage is an integral part of the human rights corpus.
The mission statement: The basic goal of “Suburbium” is to revive the Lower Town of Petrovaradin Fortress (a baroque, urban-architectural entity within Petrovaradin) by activating local inhabitants, people of creativity and eminent public individuals from Petrovaradin, Novi Sad, from other cities along the Danube and from „fortress towns“ all over the world, in order to create new bonds among them.

This place of an exceptional historical and cultural value is ideal for the realization of specific and multidisciplinary cultural heritage projects. The Civic Association “Suburbium” (established 2002) promotes civic society values and creativeness, it helps individuals to come to light encouraging freedom of speech and expression, brings together people in common actions in order to contribute to the democratization of the society; the Association hosts round tables about cultural-historical values of Petrovaradin’s Suburbium, with an effort to open prospects for better future days. Architects, historians, painters, writers, journalists, art historians and other skilled experts take part.
